Grinding or scraping

Grinding can indicate roller or track problems, binding hardware, or opener strain. Scraping that appears suddenly deserves inspection before continued use.

Popping or snapping

A loud sudden snap can accompany spring or hardware failure. If the door then becomes heavy or will not open, stop using it.

Routine noise versus a new symptom

Some operating sound is normal. A material change in volume, rhythm or vibration is more useful diagnostically than the mere presence of noise.
